
Ormond was born in Epsom, Surrey, the daughter of Josephine who was a laboratory technician and John Ormond, a stockbroker. Ormond is the second of five children for her parents. The first time she performed in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted attention. She later attended Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After one year of arts school, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art where she was graduated in 1988. Ormond made her debut appearance on British television's 1989 serial Traffik. It focused on illicit heroin trade between Far East and the streets of Europe. Ormond was the addicted daughter of the main character, who was a Home Office minister in the UK government that was involved in fighting heroin importation. The role was a hit and received overwhelmingly positive reviews.
