Queen Latifah, was born Dana Elaine Owens, March 18, 1970 in Newark. Latifah, the second child of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her political and acting skills as well as her gift for rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the name "delicate and sensitive" when she was eight years old. Latifah started singing with the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and performed for the first time in public when she sang a rendition of "Home" as one of two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah's mother was a catalyst. She was very connected to the students as well as the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey who is also known as D.J., was invited to the celebration. Mark the 45 King was asked to sing at a dance school.
